Joseph P. Rem, Jr. graduated valedictorian of his high school class, received his college degree in mathematics summa cum laude, and obtained his law degree from Rutgers Law School - Newark. He is admitted to practice in the State of New Jersey and the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.
He began his legal career as a law clerk to the Honorable Bruno L. Leopizzi, J.S.C. in the Criminal Part of the Superior Court of New Jersey in Passaic County. After his clerkship, he served as an Assistant Prosecutor with the Office of the Passaic County Prosecutor from 1976 to 1978, and successfully handled dozens of jury trials.
After working as a prosecutor, Mr. Rem went into private practice and has been defending individuals accused of criminal and motor vehicle offenses for over 30 years in both state and federal courts. His clients have included former professional athletes, former judges, police officers, and fellow attorneys, among others. Mr. Rem has successfully tried hundreds of cases and obtained excellent results for countless other clients. He has been certified as a Criminal Trial Attorney by the Supreme Court of New Jersey since 1981, part of the first group in the history of the State of New Jersey to be so certified.
An active member of the Bergen County Bar Association Board of Trustees, Mr. Rem served as President of the entire association for the 2008-2009 term. He is a former President of its Young Lawyers Section and a former chairman of the Municipal Court Committee, the Certified Trial Attorney Committee and the Criminal Practice Committee. He has also served for four years on the New Jersey Supreme Court Ethics Committee. In addition to his duties for the Bergen County Bar Association, Mr. Rem is a member of the Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers-New Jersey, the National Assoication of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the New Jersey State Bar Association, and serves on the Municipal Court Committee of the New Jersey Supreme Court.
Well known in the field of criminal and drunk driving defense, Mr. Rem is the author of the BCBA's monthly compendium of the latest criminal law developments and practice tips called the Criminal Law Update. He is a frequent lecturer to other attorneys in New Jersey on various topics related to criminal and DWI law. He is an AV-rated attorney according to the Martindale-Hubbell listing, has been named as a New Jersey Super Lawyer for criminal law practice in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and has also been named among the New York Area's Top Lawyers.
In the Press: Mr. Rem has been quoted in the New York Times, Time Magazine, The Record and the New Jersey Star Ledger, and has appeared as a guest commentator on CNBC-TV, WWOR-TV, News12-NJ, Nancy Grace, the Dan Abrams Report, and On the Record With Greta Van Susteren.
